Hello everyone!
We’ve been hard at work trying to get the main server back online. Unfortunately, a few hurdles remain, and we need to address those before it’s ready. In the meantime, we’ve made some updates to our community server and want to keep you informed about the changes. Transparency has always been a core value for us, so here’s what’s happening:
Latest Updates
The community server has been updated to Minecraft version 1.21.3, which introduces exciting new features like the creaking and the pale biome! We’ve also ensured all data packs and plugins are updated to their latest versions. If you haven’t already, make sure your game and mods are up to date to avoid compatibility issues.
Self-Hosting for Sustainability
One of the biggest changes is that we’ve moved the community server from a paid host to self-hosting on my personal PC. This decision was made to cut costs, as running the server has been a personal investment over the past decade.
To give you an idea:
- Over the last 10 years, the server has run almost entirely out of pocket, with only about $65 received in donations.
- I’ve invested over $500 in custom plugins, maps, and other features, not including hosting costs.
Hosting with PebbleHost, a great provider we’ve used for the last two years, cost money we can no longer justify given our small player base and limited donations. While their service offered 4GB of RAM (sufficient for our needs), self-hosting on my PC provides 16GB of RAM and more direct control over the server.
Future Plans
We’re exploring long-term self-hosting solutions and hope to transition the server to a dedicated PC rather than my personal one. If this proves unfeasible, we’ll return to paid hosting, but for now, self-hosting allows us to maintain operations while saving money.
What About the Main Server?
The main server, the beloved Slab Server, remains offline for now. We’re focusing on resolving the issues holding it back before bringing it back online.
Closing Thoughts
We appreciate your understanding and support as we navigate these changes. Running a server for 10 years has been a labor of love, and we’re committed to continuing, even with challenges along the way. Thank you for being part of this journey, and we’ll keep you updated as things progress!
Stay tuned, and happy crafting! 🛠️
